“Beginner” can mean a complete newcomer, a qualified beauty therapist learning a new treatment, or a healthcare professional entering aesthetics. The right starting point is different for each learner.
Start with your existing qualifications
Send the academy your certificates and a summary of your experience before booking. Ask for written confirmation that you meet the entry requirements for the exact course. A general introductory certificate should not be assumed to provide entry to every advanced treatment course.
For learners new to beauty therapy
Level 2 Beauty Therapy offers a route to discuss when building foundational salon skills. No prior beauty qualification is needed. Good spoken and written English, at Functional Skills level or equivalent, is required. Level 3 study can then be considered according to your goals and the applicable entry requirements.
Choose treatments, then choose the course
List the treatments you want to learn. Compare the specification, supervised practical work, assessment and certificate for each relevant course. Skin treatments, laser and IPL, and injectable procedures should not be treated as interchangeable subjects or one automatic progression ladder.
Applicants for the VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments must hold a minimum Level 3 qualification in a related field. Other courses have their own prerequisites.
Prepare for practical learning
Ask how theory and practical sessions are organised, how models are arranged, and how tutors assess your work. Find out what support is available after the taught sessions and whether additional practice or reassessment carries a fee.
Make a realistic plan
Confirm the total cost and attendance dates. Discuss your intended practice with an insurer and check any relevant professional or local requirements before committing. Avoid choosing a course on promises of rapid earnings or automatic eligibility for every later qualification.
